Solution Oriented Engineering
A confirmation of the soils/bedrock bearing capacity prior to construction of footings. This inspection is completed to confirm the bearing capacity provided in the geotechnical report or structural details is confirmed prior to placement of foundation or load bearing elements.
Review of soils or bedrock below a proposed roadway, sidewalk, curb etc. This inspection is to review the subgrade and provide any necessary recommendations prior to placement of engineered backfill or non-load bearing structure.
Nucleardensometer testing on engineered fill material or native backfill for proposed roadways, municipal services, below proposed structure (underside of footing), etc. – Compaction testing confirms the placed backfill meets specifications or design criteria, including onsite testing of granular road sub-base/base.
Typically any structure construction between November to March will require a frost check prior to backfilling the foundation. This is a requirement from the City of Ottawa when construction occurs during winter months.
On-site inspection for piling oversight to ensure piles are installed as per the geotechnical and structural design. Review of shop drawings and on-site issues.
Complete Field sampling of concrete as per CSA standards and structural details/specifications. Concrete field testing is completed to ensure the concrete delivered to site satisfies the intended use and specifications. Paterson can review and approve concrete mix designs.
Complete Field sampling of mortar or grout as per CSA standards and structural details/specifications. Mortar/Grout field testing is completed to ensure the concrete delivered to site satisfies the intended use and specifications. Paterson can review and comment on mix design information.
Complete Field sampling of asphalt as per municipal and/or provincial standards. as well as CSA standards and structural details/specifications. Paterson can complete on-site sampling. Paterson can review and approve asphalt mix designs.
Thermocouples – Paterson can provide temperature monitoring for various elements to ensure concrete is placed and cured within CSA limits. Lok Testing – As per ASTM C900 – This testing is usually completed for early break information. Field testing is completed on Lok inserts to provide a level of certainty for contractors to remove concrete forms. Typically used when flying forms are used for construction. CIPPOC’s – As per ASTM C873 – Consists of a hard plastic mould that is placed in a structure to determine in-situ concrete strength. Generally used for early concrete compressive strength information. Bond Testing – Testing is to be conducted using ASTM standard D7522. This testing is completed to determine the adhesion between an existing material and new material (generally existing concrete and new concrete). This testing can provide the Pull Load and Tensile Strength. Dowel Pull Test – Paterson has the ability to test small rock anchors and dowels Coring Abilities – Paterson has their own internal coring rig to core asphalt or concrete. This enables flexibility of timing and scheduling work to be completed as well as ensure quality samples are obtain for laboratory testing.
Paterson can complete various failure investigations – concrete issues (sidewalks, pavers, foundation, etc), asphalt issues (cracking, tack coat, quality, etc) or granulars (performance, quality, etc).
Paterson can provide specifications for paving activities, complete various investigations, reviews, and laboratory testing to determine existing conditions or construction quality control/assurance.
